Cam MacMurchy

Cam MacMurchyCam has rich experience in broadcast journalism, television, radio, public relations, communications, and new media.

Cam graduated from the British Columbia Institute of Technology with a Diploma in Broadcast Communications in 2000, and quickly joined Vancouver’s leading all-news radio station, News1130, as a legislative reporter and relief news anchor. For nearly 3.5 years, Cam’s voice was heard reporting a variety of stories including George W. Bush’s 2000 campaign to become President, the sniper investigation in Washington state, and British Columbia provincial politics.

Cam arrived in Beijing in 2004, and has since worked as an on-air host, consultant, and editor at China Radio International and Beijing People’s Radio (Radio 774). In addition, he served as a consultant and editor with China’s premiere international news station, China Central Television (CCTV 9). In the spring of 2006, he was recruited to the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou where he helped launch China’s first regional all-English television channel, the Guangzhou English Channel. He was Executive Editor of the station, and also hosted its flagship news and information program, Discover Guangzhou. In addition, Cam hosted the weekend program Lingnan Galllery, which focuses on Cantonese culture, as well as a ground-breaking series on young movie directors filmed in Hong Kong.

Cam has also been involved in new media, and helped develop the news department as Senior Consultant of News for UK-owned and Shanghai-based website portal Jongo.com, which aims to become China’s leading English-language web portal. He also runs two popular websites: Zhongnanhai is a place for people to discuss Chinese current affairs, politics, and life; while China Media News is a resource for professionals in China’s rapidly growing and evolving media environment.

In addition to his broadcast journalism duties, Cam also has extensive experience in public relations. He earned a certificate in Emergency Media Relations & Crisis Management from the British Columbia Justice Institute in 2003, and served as one of the lead media relations contacts with the Ministry of Transportation in the Province of British Columbia government. He was responsible for speech writing, news releases, issues management, and crisis communications. In China, he developed strong media contacts in his role as Senior Consultant of boutique public relations firm ClairePR. Cam was involved in business development and event planning, and helped implement a large-scale HIV/AIDS Commercial Media & Arts Roundtable discussion in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme, UNICEF, and UNAIDS.

Cam also loves to be behind the microphone, in front of the camera, or on stage. He has worked extensively in China as voiceover talent and emcee. His clients include Microsoft, IBM, Marriott Hotels, the Beijing Capital Museum, and more. He recently hosted a Sino-Australian inter-cultural event in Guangzhou, as well as Toyota’s exhibit at the World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems in Beijing. Cam also continues to work as a freelance journalist, and regularly appears on both local and national radio shows in Canada. His articles have appeared in the Washington Times, International Herald Tribune, Canada’s National Post, Beijing Youth Daily, China Youth Daily, Beijing Today, and Victoria’s Times Colonist.
