George Gordon
George is a 50-something veteran of 35 years in radio news and current co-anchor of the News1130 morning show, 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.
Before taking the on-air role that has helped take the station from middle of the pack to a top-three player in the market, he was the station's executive editor, brought to Vancouver in 1999 after starting up the news talk station 570 News in Kitchener, Ontario, for Rogers Communications Inc.
Before that George was the news director in London, Ontario, for CKSL AM and what is now known as Easy Rock 97.5 CIQM.
His radio journey started in 1972 in the tobacco region of Simcoe, Ontario, and led to stops in Hamilton, Winnipeg, Toronto, and Windsor/Detroit.
Best-known as one of Canada�s top anchors, George has also covered legislatures in Ontario and Manitoba. He has worked the police beat in Winnipeg, Detroit and London, Ont.; produced a radio magazine show; done extensive cable show work and written hard-edged editorials.
Along the way he has collected or collaborated on more than 20 journalism and writing awards from the Radio Television News Directors, Canadian Association of Broadcasters, New York Festivals, Michener Foundation and Edward R. Murrow Awards of Excellence.
In 2005 the News1130 morning anchor team was named the tops by the Murrow Awards in the International Division ( www.News1130.com).
George's freelance work has made him a familiar voice on commercials heard across the Lower Mainland. He is branching out into TV commercials, having recently completed one for Legal Options. His is also sought after as an emcee, with past credits including the Surrey Business Excellence Awards, Canadian Association of Broadcaster Awards, and the Terminal City Club annual Christmas party.
George also does a lot of work emceeing events for charities like the Canadian Cancer Society (www.bc.cancer.ca), including Cops for Cancer and Relay for Life; he co-emceed with Global BC�s Deb Hope at the Breast Cancer Foundation�s Run for the Cure the last three years; Climb the Wall for the BC Lung Association at the Sheraton Wall Centre; and the Big Brothers Bowl-a-thon.
In his personal life George Gordon has been married to Shirley for 32 years; they have a son, Darren, who works in the graphic design business in Vancouver.
Fitness has become a renewed passion as George works out with a personal trainer at CitaHealth, a top preventative health specialist organization in Vancouver. (www.citahealth.com) His retrofitting has allowed him to "Climb the Wall" -- all 48 flights of the Wall Centre; run in The Vancouver Sun Run; and complete the BMO Grouse Grind in support of Lions Gate Hospital.
